Food for Life in Ukraine – Even a war can’t stop us

Food for Life Ukraine is battling against all odds to bring hope and healthy meals to victims of the current conflict. Volunteers are serving thousands of hot plant-based meals all over the region to needy families.

The above video is 3 days in the life of volunteers of Food for Life in Donetsk. The video highlights some of the places FFL volunteers are serving free meals: Monday and Thursday of Ilovaysk – 700 servings; Tuesday: Khartsyzk – 700 servings; Wednesday: village Kommunar -700 servings; Orehovo -150 servings; village Pastuhovka -150 servings. Volunteers also visit centers for pensioners and single disabled citizens in Kalinin, Kiev, Kuibyshev and Petrovsky.

Food for Life Volunteers from Lugansk, Ukraine opened a social dining room to provide hot meals to  155 people. Their tasty lunch consisted of pea soup, bread and semolina pudding.

“The electricity went off before we could complete cooking the porridge and so our cooks thought not to serve it out, but the people demanded it, so we happily obliged,” explained one of the volunteers.

Many people have expressed admiration for FFL’s soup. Many of them had no idea that vegetarian soup can be so delicious.

Hello, hope this finds you well and safe,

I am a 40-year-old Canadian, just arrived in Kyiv 2 weeks ago, here for as long as I can be of help (6 months +).

I have spent the greater part of my life cooking and managing kitchens specifically in remote areas and/or places with a difficult access to produce, sometimes unconventional, underequipped and with sometimes unexperienced teams.

Unlike cooking in restaurants where clients change, I have developed a specific ability to feed large numbers of the same people daily (75 to 450) and for long period of time. Satisfying these people with healthy meals by being creative, resourceful, and by adapting to a number of unusual situations.

I have worked as a cook in mining/drilling/logging remote camps in Norther Canada, socially oriented restauration work in several West African countries, and on remote film and TV productions remote sets.

Also, having grown up on a self-sufficient farm in Canada, I have learned and then developed a great ability to the art of preserving (picking, dehydrating, marinating, curing, fermenting, canning etc) which I feel could be beneficial in this situation, foreseeing probably difficult living conditions this upcoming winter in Ukraine.
Other then cooking, I have worked for several NGOs in West Africa, India, Canada and South America in project development, project coordination, host for volunteering programs, English and French teacher, ICTs for youth development and various other expat/ volunteer positions.

Please get back to me if my skills and experiences might be of help in Ukraine for this winter and do not hesitate if more information if needed.

Thank you in advance,
Stay safe,
Francis Cardinal
