For the last four years, Food for Life volunteers in Ecuador have been serving delicious vegetarian meals to underprivileged school children.
The tasty lunches consist of rice and lentil stew, nourishing desserts and aromatic mint and lemon drinks.
In some areas, the lack of basic services is alarming, as they drive down dusty or muddy streets filled with trash on the way to their chosen distribution point. In some case, traffic obstructions force them to go by foot. But nothing deters their enthusiasm to reach as many people as possible.
On May 22, Earth Day, the volunteer felt that the best way to celebrate Mother Earth was to raise awareness of the enormous environmental pollution caused by the factory farming of animals, and what better way to do that than serve a delicious vegetarian meal!? An important fact overlooked by other world hunger initiatives is the fact that most of the world’s grain production is fed to farm animals and not people! If the world subsisted on a plant-based diet, and resources of the world were equally shared, more people could be fed and there would be zero world hunger.
On Earth Day, FFL volunteers served spicy italian noodles and olives, to environmentalists, cyclists and local Rastafarian brothers who invited them to taste their delicious vegetarian burgers.
At many of the schools they reach, up to 500 vegetarian lunches are served to eager teachers and children. To learn more, visit: FFL Ecuador Facebook page
