Welcome to Food For Life Northland
Our mission is to nurture our community through nutrition - feeding mind, body and spirit.
Food for Life is the brainchild of local Hare Krishna devotees, Buddhi and Suvarna, who both work running the organisation. However, it is very much a community project. Help, support and donations from local businesses, growers, organisations and the community make it possible to do what we do. Not to mention the many volunteers who help prepare and deliver meals, and those who work behind the scenes.
In December 2011, Food for Life Northland opened our doors and started out serving over 50 meals a day, three days a week in our Community Café to all those who walked through the door. Not long after we started serving hot lunches at a local decile one school.
Today our main focus is our Lunch at School programme, where we provide hot, nutritious lunches to over 1000 school children at five primary and secondary schools in the Whangarei region.
You find out more here or on our Facebook page.
Our café is open 12-2pm Tuesday to Thursday, providing a delicious, balanced lunch to everyone who walks in the door. Meals are by donation (koha), so those who are struggling financially can enjoy a wholesome meal for whatever they can afford, and those who are able to afford to can donate to support our work and pay-it-forward.
The Food for Life Community Cafe offers a well-balanced nutritious and tasty meal, with most of the produce used being donated from local growers and home gardeners
No one is turned away. However each meals cost approximately $4-5 per meal to make, so we encourage those who are working to give $5 - $10, while those who are aren’t working or struggling financially to donate $1- $2 towards costs. Your donations pay-it-forward and help us help others.
