August 31, 2010 -- Hot vegan meals are now being distributed by Food for Life Global affiliate, Sri Krishna Bhakti Parivar, in Pakistan. "The people are swarming to get these delicious meals," said emergency coordinator, Vanamali Das.
"Our current team consists of 40 volunteers and we feel confident that with the support of donors, we can reach thousands of needy families affected by the flooding."
DONATE NOW
Report by: Sandeep Kumar Maheshwary
August, 2010 -- Food for Life Global in partnership with affiliates in Pakistan and India are mobilizing teams to provide meals to survivors of the recent floods in Pakistan.
According to FFL coordinator, Sandeep Kumar Maheshwary, most of the public have been collecting clothes, dry food, water, and medicine for the affected areas. They are then transporting the donations to local community groups or the Army who have set up relief camps.
Maheshwary suggests that the most practical type of meal should be dry, like Dhal Chawal, or spicy rice, etc, however, the kind of meals served will largely be dependent on the financial support Food for Life Global recieves. "Food for Life is famous for providing hot, tasty nutritious meals at such times, and the Pakistan food relief will be no exception, explains global director, Paul Turner.
The Food for Life Pakistan Relief Team will focus on poor, minority groups who have lost their homes.
Food for Life Pakistan Relief Team will also try to collaborate with other NGOs, namely, the Swami Narayan Welfare Temple and Trust and the Pakistan Hindu Council.
The teams will be led by Ram Yagya who is a full time volunteer with the Food for Life project and ISKCON Karachi.

Lorax Community Garden Sancuary
JUNE 17, 2010 -- Over the last few months, Food for Life Global has invested in the development of the Lorax Community Garden Sanctuary located in Riverdale, NY. Project director, Kathryn Davis has made substantial headway in establishing the indoor nursery and developing partnerships with local organic farmers and businesses that support an organic, plant-based diet. The project focuses specifically upon teaching people how to cultivate, forage and mindfully prepare food for themselves and their families. "Our main objectives are based upon a philosophy of peaceful (Ahimsa) co-existence with nature and other species as part of our everyday existence and community ethic," she says. At present, the project is geared primarily toward children and their families. www.loraxcommunity.org

Working
Villages International - A New FFL Affiliate
Project
Imagine
a town with: NO
POLUTTION, 100% RECYCLING, NO UNEMPLOYMENT,
NO HUNGER and FREE HEALTH CARE...it's
happening in Africa!
There are very few places on Earth like
the Ruzizi Valley. The average temperature
remains around 80 degrees Fahrenheit
all year round. There is plentiful water,
rich soil and four growing seasons. However,
ten years of brutal civil war had destroyed
everything.
In 2005, the people of the Ruzizi Valley,
in partnership with Working Villages
International (WVI), an affiliate of
Food for Life Global began implementing
an innovative yet practical economic
model of sustainable village development.
A model village is literally rising
from the ashes, and include full employment,
private ownership of small farms and
businesses, zero carbon footprint and
100% recycling. The project is a practical
demonstration that it’s possible
to profoundly increase living standards
in rural Africa without hampering local
culture and ingenuity.

Uniting
the World Through Food
Since food
is so central to everyone’s
life, it is only natural
that it is among the most
effective mediums to initiate
a change in consciousness.
When a person is living consciously,
they will do so in all their
thoughts and actions. Their
lives will be consistent
and in harmony with their
environment. And, living
consciously begins with conscious
eating.
Living on VEG
IN THIS WEEK (Feb 23) Amy Spencer -- In any bookstore, you'll find a huge selection of books devoted to food. As residents of an industrialized nation, we have witnessed people making the connection between the food on their table and where it came from. In recent years, popularity has surrounded book titles like The Omnivore's Dilemma by Michael Pollen or weight-loss advising titles like Eat This, Not That! Not to mention movies like "Food Inc." and the locally-produced "Killer at Large."
These books contain topics about organic, gluten-free and lactose-free foods. Books about vegetarian and vegan diets have long been in these sections, but have become super hip with Skinny Bitch by Rory Freedman and Kim Barnouin. While it's not advertised as a book about going vegan, the authors advise eliminating animal products from the diet for weight loss.
As the media has focused on food, more people are making the shift to vegetarianism and veganism. We've witnessed this change in our own city with the addition of restaurants such as Vertical Diner, where you can get animal-free diner-style dishes; City Dogs, a vegan hot dog/taco cart that serves very convincing fake meats; and bakeries such as City Cakes and Cakewalk Baking Co. that specialize in animal-free sweets.
