Feed the World Week

Video of the month

A compilation of how hunger affects people

October 15 - 21 will mark the annual observance of Feed the World Week (FWW). During this week, Food for Life volunteers and concerned people in over 60 countries will serve out millions of karma-free vegetarian meals to the world!

The inspiration behind Food for Life, Srila Prabhupada, once wrote: "“By the liberal distribution of prasad (pure vegetarian food) and sankirtan (pure sound), the whole world can become peaceful and prosperous.” He also said, "...one earns happiness by making the cows and bulls happy."

Food for Life Global's mission is to UNITE THE WORLD THROUGH FOOD, and so we invite anyone and everyone to join us during this week! Contact your local Food for Life representative to volunteer some time, or become an advocate or donate now!

Feed the World Week is based on the following principles:

1. Feed the World Week is based on a simple principle: For one week, the world should experience a wholesome, nonviolent diet, and thus pave the way for a peaceful and prosperous world.

2. Feed the World Week is an open community event to show how food when prepared and distributed with love, has the power to unite and heal the world.

3. Feed the World Week is a call for action: for the world to move away from animal agriculture—the greatest cause of environmental destruction and the principle reason why there is so much hunger in the world today.

Feeding the Body and Soul

Potomac Gazette, by Christina Marnik | Staff Writer - Every Friday morning Steve Szili heads to the Hare Krishna Temple in Potomac to cook meals that are meant to feed body and soul.

Szili leads the Potomac chapter of Food for Life, the world’s largest vegetarian food relief organization, according to its Web site. It is based in Hare Krishna — a faith rooted in the belief that a person’s thoughts and emotions go into everything they cook.

‘‘We believe when somebody cooks any food the person’s conscience goes into the cooking,” said Chaitanya Bhagavan Dasa, temple manager and head minister. ‘‘It’s not simply giving the food and satisfying one’s hunger, it’s also feeding the soul and satisfying the hunger the soul has.” Read full article

Meat is Murder on the Environment

NewScientist.com news service, Daniele Fanelli - A kilogram of beef is responsible for more greenhouse gas emissions and other pollution than driving for 3 hours while leaving all the lights on back home.

This is among the conclusions of a study by Akifumi Ogino of the National Institute of Livestock and Grassland Science in Tsukuba, Japan, and colleagues, which has assessed the effects of beef production on global warming, water acidification and eutrophication, and energy consumption. The team looked at calf production, focusing on animal management and the effects of producing and transporting feed. By combining this information with data from their earlier studies on the impact of beef fattening systems, the researchers were able to calculate the total environmental load of a portion of beef.
